Inigo Martinez has completed his transfer to Barcelona on a free transfer after leaving Athletic Bilbao at the end of last season.
The 32-year-old’s transfer was officially announced earlier today on the club’s official website and sees the Spanish international move to the Spotify Nou Camp on a two-year deal.
Inigo Martinez confirms Barca switch
Martinez has had a $435m release clause immediately entered into his contract which is valid until 30 June 2025 and joins Ilkay Gundogan as Xavi Hernandez’s second free transfer this summer as the Barca captain looks to shuffle his pack after the Catalans won their first La Liga title in four years.
Martinez has played over 350 La Liga matches already for Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao and his wealth of experience is likely to aid a young-looking backline next season alongside either captain-in-making Ronald Araujo, Martinez’s international teammate Eric Garcia, or former Chelsea man Andres Christiensen.
Known for his good ball carrying on his favored left foot and his excellent heading ability, Martinez should prove to be another shrewd signing by the 43-year-old Xavi.
