The Football Association are reportedly preparing to lure Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola into becoming the next head coach of the England national team.
Guardiola has been at the Etihad Stadium since 2016 and according to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, the 50-year-old Catalan is the dream appointment for some at the FA.
Pep Guardiola linked with England men’s national team
Guardiola, highly regarded as one of the best coaches in the world for over 15 years now, has two years left on his current deal with the Cityzens taking him up until 2025.
It is widely considered that current head coach Gareth Southgate is set to step down from the England managerial post following the conclusion of Euro 2024- which will provide a potential 12-month gap between Southgate leaving and Guardiola arriving.
The English FA could potentially pay Guardiola out of his last year at City but after recording huge Covid losses of $376m, this seems extremely unlikely.
Guardiola has always been considered by many in Spain to be the ideal candidate for their national team coach but due to his public support for Catalan independence, political barriers may stop him from being offered the top job.
