Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is considering raiding his old club Villarreal with the signing of winger Alex Baena.
The 22-year-old received his first call-up for the Spanish national team from head coach Luis de la Fuente for La Roja’s UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Georgia and Cyprus after an impressive personal start to the season.
Alex Baena wanted by Aston Villa
According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Emery proved he was able to get the best out of Baena’s ability when the two worked together at the Yellow Submarine.
Whilst at the Estadio de la Ceramica, Emery installed a $37.5m release clause into Baena’s contract in an attempt to put off other suitors in making a bid for the winger, who can also play as a number 10.
Baena could be convinced to stay at Villarreal as his career continues to develop on track but after luring Pau Torres away to Villa Park this summer, Emery’s relationship with Baena could be enough to force through a move to the Midlands in January.
