The oldest soccer rivalry in the world is set to return tonight when Scotland take on England at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
Often referred to as the “Auld Enemy” by the Scottish, Gareth Southgate’s England side head north of the border on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine in Poland on Saturday.
Scotland take on England in excellent form
By contrast, Steve Clarke’s Scotland side are in terrific form: winning eight of their last nine matches, including a superb 2-0 win over Spain at home back in March.
Recognized as the oldest international soccer match by FIFA, the Scotland vs. England rivalry goes all the way back to 1872 when the Scots hosted the English in front of just 4,000 spectators at the West of Scotland Cricket Club’s ground in Partick.
The match finished 0-0 then, as it did two years ago in the sides’ last meeting at Wembley in the COVID-delayed Euro 2020.
The first international meeting helped form the 1872 Laws of the Game. Back then, throw-ins were awarded to the first team to touch the ball down after it had gone out of play and half-time was only blown by referee William Keay because no goals had been scored in the first half.
