The mother of Harry Maguire has spoken out on the criticism her son has received for his recent performances for club and country.

In a public statement, Zoe Maguire said, “As a mum, seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.”

Harry Maguire subject to abuse by fans and media

Maguire’s form since arriving in 2019 at Manchester United for a World record transfer fee for a central defender has nose-dived dramatically. However, his performances for the England national team under Gareth Southgate had been regularly consistent, until Maguire’s dreadful second-half performance against Scotland on Tuesday which included scoring an own-goal past a wrong-footed Aaron Ramsdale.

However, as posted by Fabrizio Romano, Maguire’s mother has stated that the abuse of her son has gone too far, stating, “For me seeing him go through what’s he’s going through is not ok. Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others may not be able too. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody”.
