Western Conference outfit Vancouver Whitecaps have announced the signing of veteran Canadian forward Junior Hoilett on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has signed a short-term contract until the rest of the season after leaving English Championship club Reading despite being offered a new deal by the Royals.

The versatile forward, who has also operated as a wing-back in the past, made his name back in 2010 for Premier League side Blackburn Rovers as a dangerous dribbler with good end product and a rocket shot.

Since then, Hoilett has spent the majority of his career in the English Championship- minus two seasons back in the top flight with Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City.

After captaining the Canadian national team during the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, Hoilett is now returning to his homeland for his first-ever taste of MLS action.

Speaking of his move today, Hoilett said, “I’m super excited to be here in Vancouver, where I shared many great memories at BC Place in front of amazing fans.

“I can’t wait to make new memories and help this team achieve our goals for the remainder of the year.”

Caps’ Sporting Director Axel Schuster added his delight, saying, “Junior brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our group. We are very pleased to welcome Junior and his family to the club.”
