Cash-strapped Barcelona are tightly constrained to La Liga’s internal financial regulations and whilst remaining approximately $1.25b in debt, the Catalans must convince the Spanish Football Federation they can afford the Spanish international’s services for the forthcoming season.
Publically, Barcelona remain confident that they can register the Basque Country-born defender, who brings a wealth of experience to the Nou Camp after making over 350 La Liga appearances during spells for Athletic Bilbao and former club Real Sociedad.
