Just when you thought that gameweek five of the Premier League was over along came Southampton and Brighton’s clash at St Mary’s on Monday night. In fairness, it turned out to be an entertaining encounter, as the clash finished 2-2.
The home side took a two-goal lead through a sensational long-range strike from midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before Danny Ings added a second goal from the penalty spot.
However, Shane Duffy scored to half deficit, before veteran striker Glenn Murray equalised from the spot in stoppage-time.
Saints home woes continue
Southampton will be highly disappointed to have only drawn Monday’s encounter. In reality, at two goals up the Saints should have coasted to victory. However, the team from the south coast have a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot.
The draw against the Seagulls means that Mark Hughes side have now won just once in their last 14 home games in the Premier League. Records like that lead to relegation fights, just as it did last season for the Saints, who narrowly avoided the drop.
Most teams looking to avoid a dogfight at the bottom of the table will be looking for their home form to be solid. Southampton have not got that comfort, so this could be a long hard season for Hughes’ team.
Brighton still terrible on their travels
As bad as Southampton are on home soil, Brighton are even worse on their travels in the Premier League. However, Chris Hughton’s side are a pretty tough team to beat at the Amex Stadium, but on their travels they are woeful.
In fact, the Seagulls have now failed to win in their last 16 away games in the English top-flight. A record of just two wins in 22 games on their travels since promotion indicates that Hughton’s side are poor travellers.
However, as their home form is relatively strong the south coast side can afford to draw some of their away games. The Saints may be poor at home, but to get a point from two goals down has to be considered a decent result for Hughton’s side.
Brighton may not be able to depend on their stellar home record to avoid a relegation fight this season. Picking up more points away from the AMEX Stadium would certainly help their fans sleep a lot easier at night.
Both teams could be in the relegation battle
It is very early in the Premier League campaign, but both of these teams are showing signs that they could be in for a long hard season. Brighton are currently the fifth favourites for relegation with the bookmakers this season.
Southampton are slightly longer odds to suffer the drop this season. However, the two teams are level on points and with the Saints home form still poor, they look to be in as much danger as the Seagulls this season.
The draw at St Mary’s was certainly a better result for the away side than the home side. However, both need to start winning games quickly to avoid a struggle at the bottom of the Premier League table this season.
