The first day of action of the Premier League’s gameweek seven saw the league’s top three in action once again. It was a good day for champions Manchester City, who defeated Brighton, as rivals Chelsea and Liverpool drew at Stamford Bridge. Manchester City record a routine win over Brighton
Reigning champions Manchester City recorded a routine 2-0 win over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium in one of the day’s 3 PM kick-offs.
The Citizens took a while to make the breakthrough, as Germany international Leroy Sane’s cross to the far was met Raheem Sterling who had a simple tap-in. Star striker Sergio Aguero added the Citizens second on 65 minutes.
The Argentinian international beat three defenders before finding Sterling, who returned the ball to the striker and he made no mistake from 12 yards out. The goal was his last touch of the ball, as Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus replaced him soon afterwards.
In the end, it was a comfortable victory for the Citizens, who are now top of the table courtesy of superior goal difference to second place Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s side remain the favourites to win the Premier League title.
Brighton have now failed to win in their last six games in all competitions, and are just three points clear of the dreaded relegation zone.
Late Sturridge strike rescues Liverpool at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the late kick-off, as a last-gasp goal from Daniel Sturridge maintained the visitors unbeaten run.
Chelsea took the lead on 25 minutes and it was through the familiar source of Eden Hazard. A good team move eventually led to Mateo Kovacic finding the Belgian winger who found the far corner of the net with a low strike.
Mohamed Salah spurned a number of chances for the Reds before the Merseysiders salvaged a point with just a minute on the clock. Hazard also missed a good chance one-on-one with Alisson at the other end of the pitch.
Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge had been on the pitch just a few minutes. However, he had the ultimate impact with just a minute of normal time remaining, as he curled home a superb effort from 30 yards out.
The result leaves Liverpool in second place, due to leaders Manchester City’s superior goal difference. Chelsea remain third place, two points behind the leading pair.
West Ham heap misery on Manchester United
One of the most noticeable results of the day came in the early kick-off at the London Stadium, as West Ham recorded a 3-1 win over struggling Manchester United.
The Hammers took just five minutes to take the lead, as Brazilian international Felipe Anderson produced a superb flicked finish at the near post. Just before half time, the home side doubled their lead. Andrey Yarmolenko’s effort took a massive deflection off Victor Lindelof to beat David De Gea in the United goal.
United looked to be back in the game on 71 minutes, as substitute Marcus Rashford cleverly flicked home a header at the near post. However, West Ham wrapped up the points on 74 minutes. Mark Noble produced a fantastic ball through the hurt of the defence to Mark Arnautovic, who fired past De Gea.
After a terrible start to their Premier League campaign, the Irons have now taken seven points from games against Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United. Meanwhile, the visitors are tenth place in the Premier League table and boss Jose Mourinho is under immense pressure.
