Matchday one of Gameweek two of the Champions League produced some great drama as always, with a major shock and contrasting fortunes for the English sides involved. Here is a detailed look at Tuesday night’s Champions League results:
European champions suffer a shock defeat in Moscow
One of the biggest talking points from Tuesday night’s games was CSKA Moscow defeating reigning champions Real Madrid 1-0.
The home side took just two minutes to take the lead through on-loan Everton midfielder Nikola Vlasic. The Croatian youngster seized control of a poor backpass from Toni Kroos and fired past Keylor Navas from just inside the Real Madrid penalty area.
The Spanish side dominated possession, enjoying 73 per cent possession in fact. The reigning European champions also had 26 shots on goal but failed to find a reply. Casemiro, Karim Benzema and Mariano Diaz all hit the woodwork.
CSKA managed to hold on, despite the dismissal of experienced goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev in stoppage-time for dissent. The win means that CSKA top the group. Despite the defeat, Los Blancos are still favourites to win the group, though.
City rescue late win against Hoffenheim
The home side took less than a minute to open the scoring, as forward Ishak Belfodil fired an effort through the legs of Ederson. The lead did not last long, though, as the Citizens equalised on seven minutes. Leroy Sane did well to pull the back to Sergio Aguero, who poked the ball home.
Sane saw a second-half penalty appeal turned down before Silva struck the decisive goal with just three minutes remaining. The Spaniard capitalised on a mistake by Stefan Posch before firing home much to the relief of everybody involved with the Citizens.
The win was much needed after City’s surprise 2-1 home defeat in their group opener against Lyon. The victory means that Pep Guardiola’s side are second in the group, with Lyon leading the pack on four points.
Uninspired United draw with Valencia
Manchester United produced another lacklustre display at Old Trafford as the Red Devils drew 0-0 with Valencia. In truth, both teams were poor and struggled to create much in terms of clear-cut chances in a frustrating match. The visitors enjoyed the better of the first half, but United improved in the second half.
In the latter stages of the game, United’s brightest player on the night Marcus Rashford clipped the bar with a free-kick. However, that was as good as it got for the beleaguered home side.
The Red Devils remain second place in Group H, two points behind leaders Juventus, who unsurprising have maximum points from their two group games so far this season.
More worrying for United is the fact that they have now failed to win in four games, three of which have been at Old Trafford.
Valencia are third-place in the group, having taken just one point from their two group games so far. Marcelino’s team have now won just two of their last ten games in all competitions.
