Newcastle United are understood to still be interested in signing Inter Milan central midfielder Nicolo Barella and could come back in for the Italian international in January.
The 26-year-old has been voted the best midfielder in Serie A twice whilst playing for the Nerazzuri and according to Caught Offside writer Mark Brus, the Magpies made an approach for Barella along with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool this summer.
Nicolo Barella could be set to leave Inter Milan
Barella is under contract at San Siro until 2026 so the club are not under immediate pressure to sell but will be prepared to do business when the transfer window re-opens if they receive a huge fee for one of their star players.
The midfielder will reportedly be available for around $96.5m. The three potential suitors for Barella all strengthened their midfield this summer, but the ambitious Newcastle seems Barella’s most likely winter destination at this stage.
