Chelsea’s 16-year-old South American sensation Kendry Paez made his debut for the Ecuador first team last night in their World Cup qualifier win against Uruguay.

Starting in a midfield three, Paez starred for the 70 minutes whilst he was on the pitch and provided the assist for Felix Torres’ second goal in a crucial 2-1 win in Quito.

At just 16 years and 131 days old, Paez also became the youngest-ever South American player to play for the senior team after all-time legend Diego Maradona made his Argentina debut in 1977.

Known for his dribbling and ability to unlock defenses due to his excellent passing ability, Paez has earned comparisons to the great Lionel Messi.

Despite his $20m transfer to Stamford Bridge being completed back in June, Chelsea fans will have to wait until 2025 to watch Paez in the flesh as he continues his development at boyhood club Independiente del Valle.
