The second round of gameweek 21 games took place on Wednesday night. The big results came at the bottom of the table, with vital wins for Burnley and Crystal Palace. Here is what happened on a big night in the Premier League:
Clarets see off the Terriers at the John Smiths Stadium
Burnley recorded what could be a crucial 2-1 win over bottom of the table Huddersfield, as both teams finished the game with ten men.
The home side took the lead on 33 minutes, as Steve Mounie headed home from an Isaac Mbenza left-wing cross. However, Burnley were back on level terms seven minutes later. The lively Dwight McNeil produced some good skill before firing in a low cross that found Chris Wood six yards out and the former Leeds striker could not miss.
Things got even worse for Town less than a minute later, as Christopher Schindler received a red card for a second bookable offence after bringing down McNeil on the edge of the Terriers penalty area.
Burnley took the lead on 74 minutes, as Ashley Westwood found Ashley Barnes, who beat Jonas Lossl in the home goal with a curling effort. The Clarets were reduced to ten men in the last minute, as Robbie Brady was shown a straight red card for a foul on Mbenza.
The three points moved Burnley out of the relegation zone and up to 16th place in the Premier League table. Huddersfield remain bottom of the table, eight points away from safety. The Terriers are red-hot favourites to suffer relegation to the Championship.
The Eagles get the better of Wolves in the Midlands
Crystal Palace recorded a 2-0 win at Wolves’ Molineux Stadium to move further clear of the relegation zone.
It took until the 83rd minute for the deadlock to be broken, as Jordan Ayew scored his first goal for the Eagles. The forward controlled a miss-hit shot from Patrick van Aanholt superbly before firing home from close-range.
The visitors sealed maximum points deep into stoppage-time, Luka Milivojevic scoring from the penalty spot after Ryan Bennett had fouled Wilfried Zaha in the penalty area.
The win leaves Palace 14th place in the top-flight table, six points clear of the relegation zone. Wolves are now ninth place in the table and looking set to enjoy a good return to the Premier League.
Red Devils continue winning run under Solskjaer
The visitors took the lead on 64 minutes. Martin Dubravka made a hash of a Marcus Rashford free-kick and substitute Romelu Lukaku was on hand to score with his first touch of the ball. The Red Devils clinched victory with ten minutes left on the clock, as they hit the Magpies on the counter-attack with Rashford firing home.
The victory means that the visitors remain sixth place in the table, but are now just six points behind fourth-place Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish. Meanwhile, Newcastle are 15th and just two points above the relegation zone.
