According to Sky Sports reports, Championship West Brom are interested in appointing Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder this summer. The Baggies are looking for a new permanent boss after the sacking of Darren Moore last season and failure to win promotion.
Wilder has been a massive success
Chris Wilder has been a massive success with his boyhood club. In fact, the 51-year-old has helped the Blades win two promotions, guiding the Sheffield outfit back to the top-flight last season after a 12-year absence.
Wilder has always maintained his dream was to take his beloved Blades back to the Premier League, so their success is a real feel-good story. His performance in the United dugout has obviously attracted the attention of other clubs.
The Blades boss seems to be living the dream at the moment. However, there are big storm clouds behind the scenes, which have upset the team’s preparations ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Problems behind the scenes
Wilder is reportedly frustrated about problems in the Blades boardroom. Sheffield United is currently in the midst of a bitter dispute between the co-owners of the club Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
The pair are currently battling it out in London’s crown court, in a case that is unlikely to be resolved until the end of July. The problems between the pair have not helped the team’s preparations for their top-flight return.
Reportedly, Wilder is frustrated by the lack of funds available to strengthen his squad, which is likely to be more important than ever now the Blades will be playing Premier League football.
The clubs lack of progress in improving the team’s training ground has also been of frustration to the Blades boss. It seems not is all well in the Chris Wilder camp, despite the team’s success on the field.
Likely to stay at Sheffield United
Even despite behind the scenes problems, it is difficult to see Chris Wilder leave his boyhood club at this point in time. The Yorkshire club are set to play Premier League football for the first time in a long time.
The Blades are favourites for a quick return to the Championship next season, but they have still achieved the feat of making the top-flight. The Sheffield United job was always going to be challenging.
However, Chris Wilder has helped the club overcome a number of big challenges in recent seasons. Nobody expected them to achieve promotion, but Wilder’s managerial acumen helped to achieve what looked difficult a few years ago.
He would be crazy to leave United now, especially for a Championship club like West Brom. Even if the Blades fail to majorly strengthen their squad this summer and they suffer relegation, Wilder’s reputation is likely to remain intact.
The current Sheffield United squad have overachieved in recent seasons. No doubt Wilder knows they need to invest in players this summer, which could be difficult with the club’s owners in dispute.
It seems highly unlikely that Chris Wilder will be the next West Brom boss. However, strange things happen in football. It would be madness for the highly-rated boss to join the Baggies though.
Will Chris Wilder still be Sheffield United boss at the start of the season?
