On Friday, Arsenal confirmed that striker Danny Welbeck will leave the club at the end of the month when his Gunners contract expires. The forward is one of the more high-profile of seven players set to leave the club from the capital this summer.

Injury-plagued at Arsenal

The 28-year-old joined Arsenal from Manchester United back in 2014, as a player full of potential. However, constant injury problems have prevented him from reaching his full potential in north London.

His injury problems stopped him ever nailing down a spot in the Gunners starting line-up. When he was fully fit, most of the 28-year-olds appearance came from the substitute’s bench. In fact, his best moments for Arsenal arguably came from the bench.

He was always fighting a losing battle for a starting role, especially after the arrival of top forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the club in the last 18 months. Welbeck is not in the same class as the former Ligue One pair.

May do a job at another club

If, and that is a big if, Welbeck can remain injury free, then he could be a useful addition to teams outside of last seasons top-six. If he started on a regular basis, he should produce a decent number of goals, although he has never really been prolific at any of his clubs during his career.

Welbeck needs to be a regular starter for his next club to make a positive impact in the Premier League. The fact he can play out wide or as a central striker will increase his chance of playing on a regular basis next season.

The 28-year-old was a permanent fixture in the England squad when fit, so if he is playing regularly next season, then a return to the Three Lions squad is not out of the question. England are not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to central strikers.

Mid-table clubs chasing Welbeck

It seems that most of the interest in signing free agent Welbeck will come from the teams that finished in mid-table of the Premier League. The current favourites to sign the forward are Everton, who are looking at adding to their attacking options this summer.

The Toffees have to reduce their wage bill this summer too, so adding another high earner may have to wait for a while.

West Ham and Leicester are also being linked with moves for the forward. The former has already allowed another injury-prone Andy Carroll leave as a free agent. There are also doubts over the future of Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic. Welbeck could be considered a useful addition, although they will be wary of signing another injury-prone player.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers may be looking to add to his forward options, as Japanese forward Shinji Okazaki will leave the Foxes this summer.

In truth, a move to any of the aforementioned trio would be a good opportunity for Welbeck to revive his career. His next move could well define his career. So far, his football career has been rather underwhelming. To be fair to the forward that is not all his fault.

Hopefully, he can stay injury free and go on to enjoy the rest of his career, whichever club the 28-year-old joins this summer.
