We have reached the last category in our ones to watch pre-season series, which is the budget strikers. These are the strikers who could be bargains and provide value for money. Here are your ones to watch budget striker options:
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton, £6m)
The England under-21 international managed to cement a place as Everton’s first-choice striker towards the end of the campaign. The Toffees are a highly attacking team under Marco Silva. The youngster was unlucky not to collect more than the first goals and five assists for the Toffees last season.
At this current moment, Calvert-Lewin will start the new campaign upfront. However, that situation needs to be monitored, as the Toffees are reportedly looking to sign a new forward. If the Merseysider’s do not sign a forward, then he represents a good option at £6m, especially as the Toffees have a favourable start to the campaign.
Che Adams (Southampton, £6m)
The forward has been labelled the striking solution for Southampton, who have struggled for goals in recent seasons. However, Adams certainly did not struggle for goals last season, scoring 22 goals in the Championship last season. At 23 years of age, the forward is still young, but he seems to have a lot of the attributes needed to be a very good forward. The Saints have played a very progressive brand of football under Austrian boss Ralph Hasenhuttl. Adams should fit right in.
Wesley (Aston Villa, £6M)
Another new arrival in the Premier League, the Brazilian youngster has arrived to fill the gap left by Tammy Abraham returning to parent club Chelsea. The 22year-old scored 16 times last season and also produced ten assists in all competitions for Club Brugge. His performances earned him a £22million move to the Villans.
Last season was by far the best of his short career so far. He has hardly been prolific in the other campaigns of his career. However, Villa create a lot of goalscoring chances and the youngster could benefit from such a supply line.
One major attraction for the forward is Villa’s favourable opening schedule. The team from the Midlands face seven games in their first nine matches rank just two on the FPL difficulty scale. If he adapts quickly to the English top-flight, he could well prove to be a promising FPL option.
Billy Sharp (Sheffield United, £6m)
The veteran forward has been prolific throughout his career, mainly in the lower leagues of the game. Last season was no exception, as the 33-year-old scored 23 times as the Blades won promotion to the top-flight. The Premier League will be a relatively new experience for the striker, as his only top-flight experience came via just 18 minutes of two appearances with Southampton back in season 2012/13.
He will definitely enjoy far more game time this time around. The Blades will need Sharp to fire as they are one of the favourites for relegation. The veteran star will no doubt be relishing his chance in the top-flight. It may be a case of waiting to see how he starts the campaign.
The Enablers
While the above options seem to be viable options for points, there are a few forward players who could prove to be great cheap enablers. The two best cheap options seem to be Crystal Palace Connor Wickham and Southampton forward Shane Long. Neither are sure of game time next season, but their presence in your squad will mean you will be able to spend funds on players elsewhere.
