It appears that Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku is heading to Italian giants Inter, as the forward has travelled to Milan to complete the deal. Sky Sports are reporting the fee to be around £73million. The deal reportedly includes a sell-on fee too.
The move has come as little surprise, as the Belgium striker has been linked with a move away from Manchester for virtually the whole of the summer. He had recently been training back at his former club Anderlecht in his homeland, with his United future in doubt.
Not lived up to reputation at United
When Lukaku joined from Everton in the summer of 2017 for an initial fee of £75million, the striker was regarded as one of the most promising strikers in European football. At 24 years old, he was not even at his peak, yet he was prolific in front of goal on Merseyside.
He had his faults. However, he looked like he was a good signing for the Red Devils. However, he has not quite worked out the way he or United would have wanted. His first season was okay, but last season he struggled in front of goal.
The fans turned against the Belgium striker and that was the nail in the coffin of his United career. Also, last season boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favoured England’s Marcus Rashford as his central forward towards the end of the season.
A change may revive Lukaku’s career
If Lukaku would have stayed at United, his career would have continued to stagnate. He should be in his prime and firing home goals if he is ever going to fulfil his potential ability in his career.
Lukaku maybe needs fresh motivation and a switch to Serie A may just be just what he needs to start scoring goals again. The big striker has still been scoring goals for his national side, so he has not taken a terrible downturn in ability. However, he looked low on confidence last season.
The fact that Inter head coach Antonio Conte is such a big admirer will maybe lift his spirits. The reception Lukaku received at the airport on landing in Milan will show the forward how much Inter fans want him at their club. That certainly was not the case with United fans towards the end of last season. The move to Italy could well revive his slightly stalling career.
Inter looking to end Juventus’ Serie A dominance
The signing of Lukaku is a real signal of intent from Inter and head coach Conte to actually mount a realistic challenge to reigning champions Juventus. The Bianconeri have won the Scudetto in eight consecutive seasons and are favourites to make it nine in a row.
It will be difficult for the Nerazzurri to challenge the team from Turin. The signing of Lukaku may well help that situation. He may have struggled in England. However, Serie A is a very different league, so Lukaku may once again thrive for Inter.
The most important factor for Lukaku is that he will be the focal point of the Inter attack. He is the sort of player who needs to feel important and valued. He will get that in Milan, so it could be an ideal move for the striker.
