Saturday’s Premier League matches produced the usual drama, goals and controversy. Here is what happened in Sunday’s English top-flight games:
Salah double sees off Arsenal
Liverpool maintained their hundred per cent record in the Premier League this season by recording a 3-1 win over Anfield in the late kick-off, courtesy of a brace from Mohamed Salah.
The first half was a pretty open affair with chances at both ends. Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe shot straight at Adrian when one-on-one with the Reds goalkeeper.
However, it was the home side who opened the scoring on 41 minutes. Centre-back Joel Matip rose highest to bullet a header past Bernd Leno from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner kick.
The Merseysider’s doubled their lead early in the first half. David Luiz hauled back Salah in the penalty area and the Egyptian made no mistake with his spot-kick. The Reds forward added a third just before the hour mark in a rather more spectacular manner. He beat Luiz on the right, motored towards before firing an effort into the far corner of the goal with his left foot.
The visitors then had to attempt to limit the damage. Unai Emery’s team did score a consolation goal five minutes from the end through Lucas Torreira. However, it meant very little apart from the fact that he meant Jurgen Klopp’s team have yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
Liverpool will care little about that fact at the minute, as the Reds are the only team to take maximum points in the first three gameweeks in the Premier League. Despite Klopp’s team being top of the table, the Merseysider’s are still only second favourites behind Manchester City to win the Premier League title.
Eagles soar at Old Trafford
Crystal Palace produced a superb display to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to end their poor start to the campaign.
United dominated the early opportunities with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James going close to opening the scores. However, the visitors then grew into the game and found the opening goal on 32 minutes.
It was a simple goal in its construction, as Jeffrey Schlupp headed on a Vicente Guaita long-ball to put Jordan Ayew through on goal. The former Swansea then calmly slotted past David de Gea, with United centre-back Harry Maguire out of position. The Red Devils then lost full-back Luke Shaw with a hamstring shortly.
United won their third penalty of the Premier League campaign when midfielder Scott McTominay was bundled over in the penalty area. After Paul Pogba’s penalty miss against Wolves, Rashford stepped up and struck the inside of the post with his spot-kick.
Rashford also saw another penalty appeal turn down by both the officials and VAR. However, replays showed he could quite easily have won a penalty kick.
United looked to have rescued a point with just a minute remaining on the clock. Pogba stole the ball from Wilfried Zaha and found winger Daniel James. The former Swansea star then curled a superb effort into the far corner.
Palace were not finished yet though and stunned the home side with a winning goal three minutes into stoppage-time. Pogba stole the ball from Zaha and found full-back Patrick van Aanholt who fired home past David de Gea.
The result means that the two teams are now level on four from a possible nine this season, amongst a host of teams in the league table.
