Saturday’s Premier League games in gameweek three produced some surprise results and some less than surprising ones. Last season’s top two Manchester City and Liverpool recorded comfortable wins.
However, Southampton held Manchester United and new boys Sheffield United pick up a draw at Chelsea. Here is a more detailed look at Saturday’s games:
City romp home against Brighton
Reigning champions Manchester City recorded a 4-0 home win over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium, as star striker Sergio Aguero grabbed a brace.
It took the Citizens just two minutes to take the lead, as Kevin De Bruyne scored from close-range from a David Silva centre. Brighton held out pretty well while causing a few problems at the other end of the pitch.
However, City had a second goal on 42 minutes. De Bruyne played a part in this goal too, turning provider crossing for Aguero to score his first goal of the game. The Argentinian international added his second goal early in the second period, smashing home a powerful effort past Mat Ryan in the visitor’s goal.
The champions completed the scoring with 11 minutes left on the clock. Substitute Bernardo Silva took advantage of poor defending from Martin Montoya to fire home his first Premier League goal of the campaign.
The victory keeps Pep Guardiola’s side second in the Premier League table, two points behind league leaders Liverpool. However, the reigning champions remain favourites to win the Premier League title.
Chelsea throw away a two-goal lead against the Blades
Chelsea threw away a two-goal lead against Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge to draw 2-2, as the Blades bagged a last-gasp equaliser.
The Blues took the lead on 19 minutes through Tammy Abraham. Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson fumbled a header from the in-form striker under pressure from Mason Mount and Abraham scored with the rebound.
Chelsea doubled their lead just before the break after a terrible defensive mix-up between Jack O’Connell and John Egan. The pair went for the same ball and gifted Abraham the ball. The youngster then smashed an effort past Henderson from 15 yards.
Sheffield United came out for the second half in a much more determined mood and it took them less than a minute to get back into the game. Callum Robinson scored from close-range from an Enda Stevens cross. The goal made up for an earlier miss by the former Preston man.
There were chances at both ends of the pitch, but the visitors never looked out of the game and scored an arguably deserved equaliser with a minute left on the clock. Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma managed to somehow deflect a Robinson cross past his own goalkeeper to stun the home side.
The result means that Chelsea have won just once in their first four league games under new boss Frank Lampard. The Blues are ninth-place in the table amongst a plethora of clubs on five points.
The draw was a fine result for new boys Sheffield United and boss Chris Wilder. The Blades are a point and a place better off than the team from south west London, despite predictions at the start of the season that the Yorkshire outfit would struggle in the top-flight.
