Saturday’s Premier League games in gameweek five produced goal galore. Norwich shocked champions Manchester City and a Tammy Abraham-inspired Chelsea won at Wolves. Here is what happened in those clashes:
Canaries shock City at Carrow Road
In one of the least probable results of the season, an injury-hit Norwich recorded a famous 3-2 victory over reigning champions Manchester City. Norwich scored with their first attack on 18 minutes, as Kenny McLean rose above Rodri to head home from an Eni Buendia corner kick.
Ten minutes later the Canaries were in dreamland. Teem Pukki broke the offside trap and rolled the ball to the back post for young midfielder Todd Cantwell to prod home to the disbelief of both sets of fans.
Sergio Aguero headed over the bar from a Raheem Sterling cross before City got back into the game on the stroke of half-time, as the Argentinian glanced home a Bernardo Silva cross.
Norwich restored their two-goal lead just five minutes into the second period and it was from a comedy of errors from the City centre-backs John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi. Stones gave the ball away, but the danger seemed to have been averted, as the ball fell to Otamendi.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the Argentinian defender dwelled on the ball and allowed compatriot Buendia to nip in and steal the ball. The attacking midfielder squared for Pukki who poked past Ederson.
From there it was a long way back for a City side who were distinctly off colour. The Citizens laid siege to the Canaries goal, as Aguero headed over and Tim Krul produced two outstanding saves from Otamendi. City did eventually find a second goal, as Rodri fired a low effort past Krul, but they failed to find an equaliser, despite having 16 shots on goal in the second period.
The victory lifted Norwich all the way up to 12th place in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, City remain the favourites to win the top-flight title, despite being five points clear of league leaders Liverpool.
Abraham enjoys a day to remember at Molineux
Chelsea recorded a 5-2 victory at Wolves’ Molineux courtesy of a hat-trick from young forward Tammy Abraham.
After a quiet opening half-half to the game, a fantastic curling effort from Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori gave the visitors the lead. The visitors doubled their lead just three minutes later. Wolves defender Conor Coady looked to have fouled Mason Mount in the area. However, the officials let play go on and Abraham took a touch, swivelled and fired past Rui Patricio. The youngster grabbed his brace on 41 minutes, beating Coady to a Marcos Alonso cross to head home. The goal meant that the 21-year-old had scored a brace in three straight top-flight games.
The former Aston Villa loanee completed his hat-trick on 54 minutes. He beat the hapless Coady and produced a fine finish into the far corner of the net. Abraham just couldn’t stop finding the net. However, unfortunately for him, it was his own net on 69 minutes, as Roman Saiss’ header him the youngster before beating Kepa.
Wolves got a second goal with just five minutes left on the clock, as substitute Patrick Cutrone volleyed home following Kepa blocking a Matt Doherty effort on goal. The scoring was not over yet though, as Mount curled home in stoppage-time to round-off a very satisfying performance for the Blues.
The defeat means that Wolves have slipped to 19th place in the table, having failed to win any of their league games so far this season. However, Chelsea moved up to sixth place in the table, as things are starting to come together for Frank Lampard’s team.
