Brilliant Bayern batter Spurs, as Brugge pick up a draw in Madrid

Tuesday night’s games in gameweek two of the Champions League were certainly eventful. Here is a detailed look at some of the biggest talking points from Tuesday’s action:

Tottenham suffer brutal beating against Bayern

To say that gameweek two was a terrible one for Tottenham and a brilliant one for Bayern Munich would be an understatement. As we predicted, the Bavarian giants recorded a victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, no could have predicted that the German champions would inflict a 7-2 defeat on the team from north London.

The first half was not terrible for Spurs. Mauricio Pochettino’s team actually took the lead after just 12 minutes. Heung Min-Son latched on to a Moussa Sissoko through-ball and fired into the far corner of the net.

The lead did not last long though, as Joshua Kimmich hit a superb effort to beat Hugo Lloris in the home goal on the 15^th-minute mark. Just as the game looked set to level at half-time, Robert Lewandowski struck a peach of a predator’s effort. After a bit of pinball in the area, the Polish international swivelled on the edge of the box before firing a powerful low effort beyond Lloris.

Bayern then took control of the game courtesy of a superb second-period display from ex-Arsenal star Serge Gnabry. He scored his first eight into the second period, cutting inside from his wide position to fire home. Two minutes later he doubled his tally, beating Lloris with another powerful effort.

Spurs looked to have lifeline on the half mark, as Harry Kane scored from a penalty kick after Kingsley Coman clattered Danny Rose in the penalty area.

However, the deficit widened again on 83 minutes, as Gnabry scored his hat-trick with another clinical finish from a Thiago through-ball. Four minutes later Lewandowski side-footed the visitor’s sixth goal of the night. The scoring was not over yet though, as just a minute later Gnabry grabbed his fourth goal of the evening.

The defeat was the first time Spurs have ever conceded seven goals on home soil in a major competition. However, the victory just underlined Bayern’s credentials as favourites to win the group. The Bavarians remain top of the group after two wins, while Tottenham remain after picking up just one point from their group games.

Real Madrid comeback to rescue draw against Brugge

Spanish giants, Real Madrid had to comeback from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw against Belgian side Club Brugge in Group A.

The visitors took the lead on nine minutes, as Emmanuel Dennis received a good piece of fortune, as he failed to control a pass from Percy Tau, but his effort sent Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois the wrong way. The officials originally disallowed the effort for offside. However, after a VAR review, the goal was allowed to stand.

The visitors were in dreamland on 39 minutes, as while falling Dennis chipped the ball over Courtois for his second goal of the game. Home boss Zinedine Zidane decided to sub the hapless Courtois at half-time and bring on PSG-loanee Alphonse Areola.

The Spanish giants got back into the game ten minutes the second period. Captain Sergio Ramos headed home from a Karin Benzema cross. Once again, the referee’s assistant flagged for offside, but VAR overturned the decision once more.

The sending off of visiting midfielder Rudi Vormer with six minutes remaining helped Los Blancos to claim a point. In fact, the home side equalised from the resulting free-kick, as Casemiro got on the end of Toni Kroos’ set-piece.

The draw leaves Real Madrid bottom of the group, as the Spanish side has claimed just one point from two games. Brugge are second place having taken just a point more.
