Prediction and odds for the game: Switzerland v Georgia
When: Friday, 15/11/2019
Where: AFG Arena, Switzerland
On Friday night, Switzerland host Georgia in what could prove to be a vital game in Group D of qualifying for next years European Championships.
Switzerland (Odds of 1/6 for victory)
The home side finds themselves third place in the group, with Denmark and the Republic of Ireland ahead by one point. The Swiss do have the advantage of having played a game fewer than Ireland, though, so a victory in this clash would move them above Mick McCarthy’s team in the table, as they have just one remaining game.
The home side recorded a 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland last time out to boost their qualification hopes. The win came on the back of a 1-0 defeat against Denmark in their previous qualifier. The loss to the Scandinavians was Switzerland’s only loss in eight European Championship qualifiers.
However, Vladimir Petkovic’s team has won just two of their last five games in Group D, which put their qualification chances in danger.
Switzerland have been strong on home soil of late in qualifiers, as they are unbeaten in seven matches, having recorded six victories. They have also been prolific in home qualifiers, scoring at least twice in all their seven unbeaten games. At the other end of the pitch, they have kept five clean sheets in seven matches.
Georgia (Odds of 20/1 for victory)
The visitors have not been terrible in qualifying, having accrued a respectable eight points in their seven games. In fact, Georgia head into game unbeaten in three qualifiers, having drawn with Denmark and Ireland before recording a 3-2 win at Gibraltar last time out. The visitors have won just five times in 22 European Championship qualifiers.
The problem for Georgia is that the only team they have beaten in ten qualifiers is, in fact, Gibraltar, who they have defeated on three occasions. The draws against Denmark and Ireland show that they are heading in the right direction.
Georgia have struggled for any sorts of results on their travels of late in qualifying. In fact, the aforementioned win in Gibraltar ended a five-game losing streak away from home in qualifiers for the visitors.
A record of just one clean sheet in their last 18 away games in qualifying has been a big factor in that poor away record. Their recent qualifiers on their travels have been high-scoring, with over 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four outings.
Conclusion
This is a massive game for Switzerland. A win would move them ahead of Ireland in the race to seal a place at next years tournament. Georgia may not be the toughest opponents on paper. However, they are unlikely to be easy prey for the home side either.
Backing the home win at odds of 1/6 does seem the obvious bet. However, we are going with the over 2.5 goals at odds of 7/10, which again is not great value, but also looks a safe bet. We are also backing Switzerland to be winning at half time and full time at odds of 4/7.
Verdict: Back the over 2.5 goals at odds of 7/10 and/or Switzerland to be winning at half time and full time at odds of 4/7 (All odds are taken from Bet365).
