Juventus will attempt to solidify first place in Group D as they host Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League next week.
Juventus
While Juventus may be comfortably dominating Italian football, as they have been for years now, one thing that has eluded them is a Champions League title. They’ve come close in the last few years, only to be foiled in the final by Barcelona and Real Madrid, but the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo into their ranks has given them renewed hope that they can take that next big step towards glory. Of course, they have to take it one step at a time, and sealing first place in the group is going to be big for them.
A somewhat surprising draw against Lecce has been the only stumbling block in an otherwise solid run for Juve across their last six games. They beat Lokomotiv Moscow home and away in Europe, saw off the challenge of Torino and Genoa, and also managed to edge out AC Milan.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico are still well and truly in the hunt for La Liga glory, but it’s the Champions League which has allowed them to prove themselves to the world in the last few years. They’ve missed out in two finals, both to Real Madrid, which is a trait they share with Juventus. They seem to have found a solid balance within their squad this time around and while they are by no means the favourites to lift the trophy, they’ll back themselves to be firmly in the mix.
Back to back draws against Sevilla and Alaves saw their title push slow down just a little, which came against wins over Athletic Bilbao and Bayer Leverkusen. They lost their return game to the German side, but got back on track with a nice win over Espanyol.
Conclusion
These two sides are pretty familiar with one another at this stage, which we think is going to lead to something of a stalemate. Atletico are firm defensively whereas Juve have a few tricksters within their ranks that are more than capable of making magic happen. They both know that they’re all but through to the knockout stage of the Champions League, and in reality, the importance of this game solely rests in finding out who is going to finish top and who will finish second. In this instance, we don’t think either will get the upper hand.
As a result of everything we’ve just said, we just don’t think it’s going to be a goalfest which is why we’re backing the under 2.5 goal market.
