Prediction and odds for the game: Manchester City (2/7) v Everton (8/1)

We are backing both teams to score at odds of 4/6

When: Wednesday 12st January 2020, Kick-off 5:30 PM

Where: The Etihad Stadium

Manchester City

The Citizens have not been the formidable team that we have seen over the last few seasons during the current campaign. In fact, their recent league form has been slightly inconsistent, as three wins and two defeats in their last five league games show. Their poor form has left Pep Guardiola’s team 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

A narrow 2-0 home win over Sheffield United last time out does at least mean that the reigning Premier League champions have won three of their last four top-flight outings. The home side has also scored at least twice in their last four league games.

Largely due to City’s awesome attacking displays and generosity in defence, ten of their last 11 Premier League matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

City have a typically strong recent home record in the Premier League, winning five of their last six league outings. Guardiola’s team have also been highly effective in front of goal of late, scoring at least twice in eight of their previous ten league matches at the Etihad Stadium.

Everton

The visitor’s fortunes have turned around in recent games. The Toffees are unbeaten in five Premier League games, having recorded three victories and two draws. New Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti has won both his games in charge against Burnley and last time out Newcastle.

The Toffees recent Premier League matches have been relatively tight and low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four games. The Newcastle game brought those low-scoring games to an end, as Everton triumphed 2-1 in the north east.

The victory at St James Park was a welcome one, as it ended a three-game winless run on their travels for Everton. It was Toffee’s sixth straight away game in the league that saw both teams score. Everton’s recent away games have been high-scoring of late too in the top-flight, with five of their last six outings producing over 2.5 goals.

One player who has flourished since the departure of former boss Marco Silva is young striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 22-year-old has now scored five times in his last five top-flight appearances, including scoring three goals in his last two matches.

Conclusion

This game will be a far tougher one for Manchester City than it would have been a month ago. The arrival of Carlo Ancelotti as Toffees head coach has lifted everybody at the Merseyside club.

Despite the recent improvement in form, we still believe that Guardiola’s team will record a narrow victory. The bets we are backing are both teams to score at odds of 4/6 and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score anytime at odds of 3/1, as the youngster is in red-hot form and against a vulnerable City defence.

Verdict: Back both teams to score at odds of 4/6 and/or Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be an anytime goalscorer at 3/1. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
