Prediction & odds for the game: Liverpool (11/10) v Everton (23/10)
When: Sunday, 5th January 2020 @ 4.01pm K.O
Where: Anfield
Liverpool and Everton will compete in the latest Merseyside derby as they prepare to meet in the third round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool
Liverpool already have two trophies under their belt and they’re on track to win their first ever Premier League title – so why not try and throw the FA Cup into the mix? The Reds have the sort of depth that they need to get past anyone regardless of what team they’re putting out, and despite their hectic schedule as of late, Jurgen Klopp has been able to string together the sort of run that most teams can only dream of. It’s not nailed on that they’re going to go all the way, but they’ve got a great chance of doing so.
Interestingly enough the last defeat Liverpool suffered was in a domestic cup as they were taken to the cleaners by Aston Villa who beat them 5-0 in the Carabao Cup – although they did put out the kids. They went out to beat Monterrey and Flamengo over in Qatar to become world champions before registering three huge wins over Leicester, Wolves and Sheffield United.
Everton
Carlo Ancelotti has been able to inspire a feeling of hope within Everton Football Club that hasn’t been present for longer than most of us can remember. The Toffees are more than capable of forcing their way into the discussion for a place in the top ten, and beyond that, who knows what they could achieve. It’s a project that is going to take some time to get off the ground and everyone involved understands that, but they’re clearly willing to fight for it anyway.
Three draws in a row against Manchester United, Leicester (lost on penalties) and Arsenal wasn’t exactly bad going for the Toffees, and the back-to-back wins over Burnley and Newcastle kept their momentum going. They went on to narrowly lose 2-1 to Manchester City, in a game that also gave them some positives to take away.
Conclusion
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 20 games against their bitter rivals and we can’t imagine that’s going to change here. They’re too dynamic and they’re too quick on and off the ball, and in our mind, it really doesn’t matter what sort of team they put out. Everton are going to give it their all but ultimately it isn’t going to be enough – as the immediate history of this fixture should’ve told you, because they are quite literally nowhere near being ready to compete yet.
We do think both sides are going to put on a bit of a show, which is why we’re backing them to hit the over 2.5 goal mark fairly comfortably.
Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 11/10 and the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/15. (All odds are taken from bet365).
