Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (3/1) V Bayern Munich (4/5)
We are backing the away win
When: Tuesday 25th February 2020, Kick-off 8 PM
Where: Stamford Bridge
On Tuesday night, Chelsea host German giants Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the Champions League last-16.
Chelsea
The Blues have been highly inconsistent of late in the Premier League. However, Frank Lampard’s team head into this clash on the back of a 2-1 London derby win over Tottenham last time out. The win consolidated their position in the top-four of the English top-flight.
The Blues can now turn their attention to this potentially difficult European encounter. Lampard’s team book their place in the last-16 from a group involving Valencia, Ajax and Lille.
The team from south west London are unbeaten in five Champions League matches. However, they have won just three of their last nine matches in Europe’s elite competition.
The Blues recent Champions League games have offered good value for money when it comes to goals, as there have been over 2.5 goals scored in four of their last five matches in the competition.
Chelsea’s recent home record in the Champions League is not great, as the Blues have won just once in six outings. In fact, a 2-1 win over Lille in their last home game in the competition ended a five-game winless run at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.
Bayern Munich
The German giants are once again top of the pile in the Bundesliga. However, the Bavarians giants made hard work a 3-2 win over bottom of the table Paderborn last time out. The win over the strugglers means that Bayern have now won ten of their last 11 matches in all competitions.
The visitors were dominant in the group stages of the Champions League, winning all six games while scoring at least twice in all the victories. One of those victories was a famous 7-2 win at Chelsea’s capital rivals Tottenham.
Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has been in red-hot form this season in all competitions. Not only has he scored 25 times in the Bundesliga, but he also has ten Champions League goals to his name in this season’s competition. With Chelsea’s defence looking vulnerable of late, it would be hard to back against the striker adding to his goal tally at Stamford Bridge.
Bayern are 12 games unbeaten on their travels in the Champions League, recording an impressive nine wins. The German giants have also scored at least two goals in 11 of those 12 undefeated matches in Europe’s top competition.
Conclusion
Although Bayern produced an unconvincing display against Paderborn, the Bavarians are a very good team. Chelsea will have their work cut out making it to the last eight. With that in mind, we are backing the German team to record a victory in this clash. We are also backing Lewandowski to be an anytime goalscorer at generous odds as far we are concerned.
Verdict: We are backing the away win at odds of 3/4 and/or Robert Lewandowski to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 1/2.
