Prediction & odds for the game: West Ham (1/1) v Burnley (29/10)
When: Wednesday, 8th July @ 6pm K.O
Where: London Stadium
West Ham United will continue their push for survival on Wednesday night whereas Burnley’s unlikely European surge takes them to East London.
West Ham
While David Moyes is hardly the saviour that West Ham United fans wanted, he’s the one they’ve got – and if they’re serious about staying in the Premier League, the fans need to get behind him. The plans that have been put in place for the Hammers over the course of the next few years are all based around them being a top flight club, and right now, they’re dangerously close to slipping back down into the Championship. Thankfully, it looks like there could be a light at the end of the tunnel.
West Ham kicked off the restart on June 20th against Wolves, and while they were able to hold steady at the back for long periods, they couldn’t maintain it until the full time whistle as they lost 2-0 to Nuno’s men. They proceeded to lose 2-0 to Tottenham, too, before shocking the system with a 3-2 win over top four chasers Chelsea. In their last outing, they played out a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle.
Burnley
After a solid run of form since the restart, all of a sudden, Burnley are looking like genuine contenders in the race to qualify for the UEFA Europa League. Sean Dyche continues to surprise the masses by taking this club to new heights with each and every passing year, and if they’re able to put together a few more wins, they could be in for quite the end to the campaign. For now, though, they have to ensure they don’t get complacent against a side as dangerous as West Ham.
A 5-0 loss to Manchester City wasn’t the perfect way to kick off the restart, but since then, they’ve been solid. They edged past Watford and Crystal Palace with narrow 1-0 wins before a tough game against Sheffield United last weekend that ended 1-1 at Turf Moor.
Conclusion
As has been the case with plenty of games since the Premier League officially restarted, we think both teams are going to struggle to hit their best form when they meet at London Stadium on Wednesday night. It could be quite an interesting tactical battle for the first 45 minutes or so, but beyond that, we think the pace of the game will slow right down. It may not be one for the record books, but a draw would definitely put a smile on the face of most West Ham fans given Burnley’s form.
We think it’ll finish 1-1 in the claret & blue derby, which is why we’re backing the under 2.5 goals market.
Verdict: Back the draw at odds of 12/5 and the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/5. (All odds are taken from bet365).
