Prediction and odds for the game: Newcastle (8/5) vs Brighton (15/8)
We are backing the draw at odds of 21/10
When: Sunday, 20th September 2020, Kick-off 14:00
Where: St James Park
On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle host Brighton at St James Park with the home side looking to make it two wins out of two in the top-flight.
Newcastle
The Magpies opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over West Ham, with new signings Callum Wilson and Jeff Henrick both getting on the scoresheet. The victory only added to the new sense of optimism surrounding the team after the window signings of Wilson, Henrick, Ryan Fraser and Jamaal Lewis.
The win at the London Stadium ended a six-game winless run for the team from the north east, dating back to July. The result also means that there have been at least two goals scored in six of the home sides last seven Premier League outings.
Newcastle did not end last season in great form on home soil, winning just once in their final seven matches in the top-flight, while failing to win any of their final four matches of the campaign.
The Magpies have found Brighton difficult opponents in recent seasons, as the Seagulls are unbeaten in six games against the home team.
Brighton
The Seagulls started the 2020/21 league campaign with a 3-1 home defeat against Chelsea. In reality, though, they did not play badly. The opening weekend defeat means that Graham Potter’s team has now won just one of their last six matches in the English top-flight.
That poor run of league form has coincided with a poor run of defensive form, as the visitors have now kept just one clean sheet in their previous eight Premier League matches. The loss of experienced centre-back Shane Duffy has been somewhat negated by the return of Ben White to their squad, as the youngster thrived on loan at Leeds last season.
Brighton are unbeaten in their previous seven away games in the Premier League, which is the joint-best away record of any team in the English top-flight. However, the Seagulls have won just three of their last 18 away matches in the top-flight.
The visitors recent away games in the Premier League have been low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in five of their last six matches in the English top-flight. One positive for the visitors is that they have kept clean sheets in five of their last six meetings with the Magpies.
Conclusion
We predicted that Newcastle would beat West Ham on the opening weekend, with Callum Wilson getting on the scoresheet. However, this game could be a bit trickier for Steve Bruce’s team and we are predicting that this game will end all-square. The other prediction we are making is that this will be a low-scoring game, as we are backing under 2.5 goals scored too.
Verdict: We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 21/10 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/7. (All odds are taken from Bet365)
