The Premier League campaign so far has been goal-filled, with very few low-scoring tight affairs. One of the highest-scoring games of last weekend was Leicester’s incredible 5-2 win at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The victory was inspired by the Peter Pan of the Premier League Jamie Vardy, who netted a hat-trick. Vardy was also the last player to score a hat-trick against a Guardiola team. The City boss may need to try and sign the forward to stop him from scoring against his team.
Jamie Vardy goes keeps scoring goals
The experienced forward just keep going and shows no sign of slowing down. For a forward who was previously seen as a player who depends on his pace to score goals, the ageing process has not seemed to have affected him like other players. Last season he scored 23 goals and won the Premier League golden boot.
In fact, he has scored at least 18 goals in the last three top-flight campaigns. Vardy is already joint-top goalscorer in the English top-flight with five goals, rivalling Everton starlet Dominic Calvert-Lewin, ten years his junior. The forward, who came into the professional game has adapted his game and showed great intelligence to make the most of his talents in recent seasons.
Could Vardy help the Foxes to another unlikely title challenge?
We all know the story of how Leicester surprised the sporting world by winning the Premier League title in 2016. Vardy scored 24 goals that season to help fire the Foxes to the most unlikely of title triumphs. Last season the team from the Midlands were in the top-four for much of the campaign. However, Brendan Rodgers team ended the campaign in poor form and slipped out of the Champions League spots in the final few weeks of the season.
Many observers wrote Leicester off this season because of their poor end to the campaign. However, the Foxes have kicked off the season with three straight wins in the English top-flight, scoring 12 goals in the process. In a season that could very well be slightly unusual, the Foxes could just emerge as surprise title challengers.
Rodgers team would need luck with injuries, especially the evergreen Vardy. However, after their 2016 success, it would be hard to write them off in the title race, even if reigning champions Liverpool are going to be difficult to best.
Vardy will enjoy another fruitful season
The European leagues have seen several veteran forwards thrive well into their thirties. Having come into the game late, it seems that Jamie Vardy is making the most of his time at the top level of the beautiful game. The forward could well go for some time to come and if the start to the season is anything to go by, he could be set for yet another fruitful personal campaign. Whether his goals will fire the Foxes to success this season only time will tell.
