According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are set to dispense with the services of head coach Steve Bruce before their Sunday clash with Tottenham. The decision would not be a major shock, as Bruce is not a popular figure amongst the Magpies.
Newcastle’s new owners are the wealthiest of any Premier League club and are fiercely ambitious, so will no doubt be looking at appointing a high-profile head coach. Here are the current favourites for the job:
Brendan Rodgers
The Northern Irish head coach has helped turned Leicester into regular contenders for the Premier League’s top-four. He has helped build an impressive team with the Foxes regarded as one of the shrewdest operators in the Premier League when it comes to recruitment. Rodgers’s style of play will no doubt appeal to the club’s new owners and fans alike, as he is known for his attacking football.
Lucien Favre
Now out of work having previously managed at Monchengladbach and Dortmund in the Bundesliga. An experienced head coach like Rodgers likes to play, exciting football, possession-based football.
Despite producing entertaining teams at former clubs, there have been question marks over his mental strength. The job is likely to come with big expectations considering that there is likely to be a major investment in the playing squad.
Antonio Conte
The experienced Italian head coach would be the dream appointment for Newcastle. Conte has experienced success at every club he has managed in the last decade. He has won league titles in Italy with Juventus and Inter, while also winning the Premier League title during his time with Chelsea.
He has reportedly already turned down a return to England last summer, as he reportedly decided against taking the Tottenham due to a lack of potential backing in the transfer market. That seems unlikely to be a problem at newly cash-rich Newcastle. However, the job would be a major challenge and he is accustomed to dealing with teams at the top of their divisions, not the bottom.
Roberto Martinez
The current Belgium head coach has impressed with the Red Devils after an ill-fated period at Everton. The Spaniard clearly has tactical acumen, but during his time on Merseyside, he failed to fix a defensive issue that ultimately cost him his job. Despite inheriting a top group of players, he has also been unable to guide Belgium to an international trophy.
Steven Gerrard
The former Liverpool captain has done a sensational job with Scottish giants Rangers He has helped the Gers’ to overthrow arch-rivals Celtic in the SPL. The job in Glasgow is his first senior coaching role. However, he has done very little wrong during his time at Ibrox. The only thing that may work against him is his lack of experience managing in the Premier League.
Graham Potter
The highly-rated Potter’s reputation has grown after he made his name in Swedish football. He is currently the head coach of Brighton, who have made a highly promising start to the new Premier League campaign. With time Potter would certainly make Newcastle easy on the eye. Meanwhile, they would also maintain solid defensive foundations, just as he has done with the Seagulls.
